The Akinyi Lab is a multidisciplinary research group focused on understanding the ecological, physiological, and molecular determinants of disease risk in natural populations, with a strong emphasis on non-human primates. The lab integrates disease ecology, parasitology, behavioral biology, and genomics to investigate how host traits, environmental variability, and pathogen interactions shape infection dynamics across space and time.
Working primarily at human–wildlife interfaces in Kenya, the lab combines long-term field studies, epidemiological surveys, and advanced molecular approaches to generate insights relevant to both wildlife conservation and public health. Its research is grounded in a One Health framework, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health in the emergence and persistence of infectious diseases.
